Loneliness of Schizophrenic Patients: Its Relation with Ways of coping, Interpersonal Relations Ability, and Social Support

Abstract
Schizophrenics not only suffer from their symptoms but also with their impairment in almost all areas of an individual's personal and social relations with others. The comventional approaches for intervention have attended to the patients'
symptoms
or
intrapsychic pains and conflicts. While many of these approaches have resulted in a reduction of symptomatology, they do not always ensure better outcome in the matter of rehabilitation.
Although loneliness in the schizophrenic patients is frequently observed in the clinical fields, until now a few clinical descriptions have been reported. The purpose of this study is to investigate the loneliness in schizophrenic patients, and
its
relation with ways of coping, interpersonal relations ability, and social support.
The subjects were 80 schizophrenic patients from the psychiatric OPD of Hanyang University Hospital during the period of Apr lst to Nov 30th 1994 with 80 normal adults as a control group. The Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale, The Ways of Coping
Checklist,
Interpersonal Relations Ability Scale, and Interpersonal Support Evaluation List were administered to the subjects. Clinical variables and demographic data were also recorded.
@ES Results were as follows;
@EN 1) Schizophrenics were lonelier than the control group, they less often used the problem-focused coping, and perceived less social support.
2) In the schizophrenic group variables related to loneliness were the number of friends and cohabitants which are associated with social network. Clinical variables showed no relation with loneliness.
3) Lonely schizophrenic group perceived fewer social supports and less interpersonal relation ability, had fewer friends, and they were more likely unemployed
The results of this study suggest that social network and social support system should be considered for the rehabilitation of schizophrenic patients.
